In October, 2020, P&O Cruises took delivery of their largest ship to date the Ionia. The ship is the first Excellence Class vessel delivered to P&O Cruises and the new flagship of the the P&O Cruises brand and the largest cruise-ship to date registered in Great Britain (Southampton). The 184,000 ton, 1,130 foot long ship is along side in Haugesund, Norway, having departed Bremerhaven, Germany on 10/23/2020.
Some of the amenities found on-board P&O's Iona include: 17 different restaurants and eateries; 12 Bars; 4 swimming pools; 16 whirlpools; 13 Entertainment venues; and extensive spa facilities - to name a few. The Iona has a capacity of 5,200 passengers (double occupancy) and 1,762 crew.
Another unique feature of this ship is that P&O's Iona is Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered which helps make the ship greener than other cruise ships that use traditional fuel sources.
The maiden voyage for the Iona is yet to be announced, since the original maiden voyages was canceled due to construction delays related to COVID and newly negotiated delivery dates between P&O and Meyer Werft.
There is a sister ship planned for the Iona, which was originally scheduled for 2022 delivery, but due to the Coronavirus and the delayed restart of cruising, it is unclear when the second ship will be delivered.
