October 2, 2020 - Fred Olsen Cruises has announced .... "We’re delighted to announce that Bolette has been officially welcomed to the Fred. Olsen family. At a handover ceremony in Rosyth, Captain Victor Stoica proudly raised the Fred. Olsen flag on board, and took command of our new ‘flagship’. A proud moment for Captain Victor and for all of us at Fred. Olsen!
The Bolette is one of 2 ships purchased from Holland America Line as replacements for the Fred Olsen Line's Boudicca and Black Watch. The 62,750 ton, Bolette previously sailed as the Amsterdam (2000) for Holland America and her sister Borealis was previously the most recent Rotterdam (1997). October 4, 2020 - Windstar Cruises' Star Breeze left the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy for its first set of sea trials after re-engining and lengthening. Being the first of 3 ships to undergo this critical line extending refit,the major improvements included the insertion of an 84 foot mid-section at Fincantieri with 50 new suites, two new restaurants, new engines, and additional upgrades. The total capacity of the expanded ships will be 312 guests.
The $250 Million dollar refit took longer than expected due to the coronavirus pandemic. The ship was first cut in half in October 2019 and her engines were just replaced with more fuel efficient ones in February 2020. The other two Windstar ships are expected to undergo similar enhancements.
THe Star Breeze is expected to resume sailing in January 2021 from San Juan Puerto Rico on 7 day Caribbean cruises.
SunStone Ships, the largest tonnage provider in the expedition market, announced the successful Steel Cutting of their fifth next-generation, INFINITY-class vessel (CMHI 196-5).
With a goal of marrying European design and quality with Chinese ship-building efficiency, the INFINITY- class delivers cutting-edge design, innovations like X-bow technology, and significant operating efficiencies.
The Steel Cutting Ceremony of the OCEAN ODYSSEY (CMHI 196-5) took place at China Merchant Heavy Industries in Haimen, China. The Vessel will do Worldwide year-round expedition cruises for Vantage Travel. INFINITY Class Vessels are 104 meters long, and 18 meters wide, having a draft of 5.1 meters. They feature a passenger capacity between 130-200 and a crew capacity between 85 and 115. The Vessels are Ice Class 1A, Polar Code 6 and are being built with Safe Return to Port, Dynamic Positioning and Zero Speed Stabilizers. The Vessels are featuring the X-Bow® by Ulstein Design & Solutions.
They are small enough to give an exclusive atmosphere and yet large enough to yield all expected services and facilities such as a swimming pool, bar and restaurants, lounges, boutique, gym and spa.
Current INFINITY Class new-builds under way after the delivery of GREG MORTIMER are; the OCEAN VICTORY, the OCEAN EXPLORER and SYLVIA EARLE with delivery in 2021, the OCEAN ODYSSEY and OCEAN ALBATROS with delivery in 2022 and the OCEAN DISCOVERER with delivery in 2023. All vessels ordered have long-term charter agreements in place.
October 6,2020 - In a not so surprising move, Norwegian Cruise Line and associated brands, Oceana Cruises, Regent Seven Sea as well as Royal Caribbean including Azamara Club Cruises and Celebrity Cruises has pushed out their pause in operations until the end of November. Earlier this week the announcement was made to push out the start until the end of October - but the cruise lines wasted no time further adjusting those date out an additional month.
Luxury Cruise Operator Seabourn has announced that it will cancel upcoming 2020 and 2021 voyages for three cruise ships in its fleet into Spring 2021. The current dates select Seabourn Ships are expected to return to services are as follows: Seabourn Odyssey - January 15, 2021; Seabourn Ovation April 18,2021; Seabourn though May 28, 2021.
Cruise Lines executives noted a number of reason for the extended delay. Included in those reasons are: Most ships are in cold lay-up and require 60 days to bring crew back and institute safety measures, Ports still remain closed; CDC has not given their official approval as to when cruising can resume; COVID-19 cases are increasing.
In addition to the new pause until November 31, 2020 announcement some cruise lines (in addition to Seabourn announcement notes above) have announced select ships and cruises which will not resume until the Spring of 2021. Please check with the individual cruise lines since the return to service dates seem to change weekly and vary by cruise line.
October 7,2020 - Princess Cruises has announced its 2021 program will now see three Royal-class ships based in Europe, including the new Enchanted Princess, sailing on a series of voyages to the Mediterranean, northern Europe, British Isles and Canada and New England.
The Sky Princess and Regal Princess will be based in Southampton while the Enchanted Princess is slated to sail from Rome.
The Enchanted Princess will spend May to September sailing round-trip from Rome (Civitavecchia) and Barcelona before heading to New York for a short Series of New England and Canada sailings. For additional details check out the Princess website.
Genting Hong Kong is set to receive 193 million euro from the German government as part of a bailout package for MV Werften, a consortium of shipyards the company owns in Germany. The bail out is to allow the for the completion of an expedition ship as well as a mega cruise lines both under construction at the MV Werften Shipyard. THe 2 ship under construction are for cruise lines under the ownership of Genting Hong Kong - Specifically Crystal Cruises and Dream Cruises. THe ships under construction include the expedition ship Crystal Endeavor (delivery 2021) and the mega-ship World Dream (2022)estimated over 220,000 tons.
In return, the German government will secure the jobs of the shipyard workers and help to keep the German economy healthy.
Genting Hong Kong encountered financial issues about 4-6 weeks ago, at which time it suspended operations at the shipyard and sited a temporary halt of payments to creditors.
October 8, 2020 - Phoenix Reisen has announced that the Albatros will be leaving the Phoenix Reisen fleet. The Albatros, affectionately referred to as the White Lady, has been sold to Albatros for use as a stationary hotel in Red Sea/Middle East. Reports have the ship sold to Egyptian hotel interests under the corporate name of Pickalbatros. The ship is expected to be renamed and accomodation onboard the Albatros Hotel will be sold to German tourist through Phoenix Reisen.
The Albatros was built in 1973 as Royal Viking Sea for Royal Viking Line. Ironically the Albatros announcement comes on the heels of the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines announcement that the Boudicca and Black Watch will be leaving their fleet effective immediately. The three ships were the original three ships of Royal Viking Line in the early 1970's and were all sold for hotel use in a period of 2 months.
October 9, 2020 - Executives from the major cruise lines met with Vice President Mike Pense to discuss the return of cruising to the United states. The session was deemed positive and the cruise lines are expected to present their plans to return to service to the CDC. After the CDC approves the plan - a recommendation will be shared with PResidnet Trump to vote on the return to service.
Cruise line execs are hopeful that large-ship cruising in US waters may resume before the end of the year.
October 9, 2020 - India's primary cruise line, Jalesh Cruises has ceased operations. The single ship operation was appealing to the Indian Government for assistance for fuel and supplies for the 60 crew members who were maintaining the ship. The company's ship - the Karnika is anchored off the coast of Mumbai, India awaiting next steps.
The Karnika was originally built as the Crown Princess for Princess Cruises in 1990, She later became the Arosa Blu for Arosa Cruises; AidaBlu for AIDA Cruises; Ocean Village Two for Ocean Village Cruises; the Pacific Jewel for P&O Australia and finally the Karnika for Jalesh / Zen Cruises.
October 9, 2020 - P&O Australia has announced more details around the recent sale of the Pacific Dawn. The ship, which was originally supposed to be sold to Cruise and Maritime Voyages, has been sold to a new buyer after CMV went into Administration. In October 2020 Pacific Dawn was sold to Ocean Builders as a floating community permanently anchored in the Gulf of Panama. The delivery of the cruise ship is on November 4, 2020 at the port of Piraeus and will be renamed Satoshi, the smallest unit of bitcoin. .
This news comes on the heels of the announcement by Jalesh Cruises closure and the future of the Pacific Dawn's sister ship - the Karnika being uncertain.
October 10, 2020 - Costa Cruises has returned a 3rd ship to service today. The Costa Smeralda sailed from Savona, Italy on October 10th. Her 7 day itinerary is expected to visit the Italian ports of La Spezia, Cagliari, Naples, Messina and Civitavecchia/Rome.
The Costa Smeralda joins her sister ships the Costa Deliziousa and Costa Diadema who are currently sailing.
