Portuguese Owned Cruise Ship Astoria To Be Auctioned Off.

Reports for are circulating that the Astoria, originally built as the Stockholm for Swedish America Line will be sold at Auction on March 1st, 2021. The Astoria is the oldest cruise ship still sailing, with portions of her hull dating back to 1944. The ship is probably most famous for her collision with Italian Line's transatlantic Liner Andrea Doria. The collision resulted in the sinking of the Andrea Doria and the loss of 46 lives.

After being sold by Swedish America Line. the ship operated as a hotel / hostel ship in Germany. After her stint as an accommodation ship, the ship was purchased by Italian owners who conducted an extensive refit and rebuilding for Nina Cruises. Having passed through a number of owners and identities, the ship was sold to Portuscale until their bankruptcy at which time the bank took control of the ship. The Astoria has been on charter to Cruise and Maritime Voyages and was set to leave their fleet but before that happened, they too went bankrupt in July 2020. The Astoria was returned to her owners in October 2020.

It now appears that the Astoria will be auctioned off on March 1st with a starting bid of $10 Million dollars. Reports have the ship dockside in Rotterdam. It is expected that only scrappers will be bidding on the the aging vessel and with the $10 Million Dollar starting bid - it may be too expensive for them as well. The ship does have an heavy icebreaker hull so it is possible the ship could demand a high scrap value. We shall see what transpires in the upcoming weeks,
