Hurricane Joaquin has caused several cruise lines to alter their schedules.
On Saturday, Royal Caribbean's, Liberty of the Seas opted to drop a 5-day cruise to Bermuda in favor of a Canadian cruise. This proved to be a wise move - since Bermuda was hit with the brunt of the storm on Saturday into Sunday.
Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Breakaway, which was scheduled to leave Sunday at 4 PM for Bermuda, opted to wait at the pier in Manhattan until the storm passed and the Bermudian officials were allowed to access the damage. The decision was made to proceed to Bermuda AND the delay allowed the storm to head further out to sea.
The Norwegian Breakaway finally sailed around 2:00 AM Monday morning for Kings Wharf, Bermuda. Since the ship can sail to Bermuda in about 1 full day's time, the ship is expected to arrive close to its originally scheduled time.
I also find it very interesting some of the routes that ships follow during adverse weather. As seen below, the luxury operator SilverSea Cruises' Silver Whisper found shelter in the Cape Cod Bay The Silver Whisper spent Friday night circling in the bay waiting to transit the Cape Cod Canal. It was not until Saturday at 1:00 PM when it was allowed to sail through the canal and proceed on her cruise.
All New England / Canada cruises were conducted as scheduled.
Hurricanes do occur, but due to the wise judgment of the cruise lines, all passengers were safe and never in danger.
